Here it is. The Tom Richards Power Ratings, or TRPR for short.  I have rated each squad with the best getting a score of 100. I have used player strengths combined with their experience and added an individual factor based on position.  The individual factor reflects the importance of that position to gameplan success.  The coaches ability is not considered in this calculation. Therefore if you can beat a higher ranked team you are doing a great job as headcoach.
100 - Bears
97 - Texans
96 - Packers
95 - Bengals
91 - Patriots, Panthers
88 - Raiders, Broncos, Lions
87 - 49ers
86 - Cardinals
80 - Titans, Eagles, Vikings
79 - Jets, Falcons
78 - Dolphins, Steelers, Chargers, Rams
76 - Chiefs
75 - Cowboys
73 - Redskins
71 - Colts

The biggest surprise is the Falcons but I re-checked the data and got the same answer.  Enjoy.

Shit! Does this make me AFC SB Favourite?!

http://www.users.on.net/~acoombe/rofl.gif

So what this basically says is two things.

1) I did a good job with my roster during the offseason
2) If I don't finish AT LEAST with a winning record I suck!

Cheers,

Martyn

I agree with Nick about the positional importance, that is very much a personal thing I would have thought? For example, I'd imagine some people would look at my backfield and think I'm crazy to only have one guy back there, and I know some people rate LBs highly whereas I think they are one of the least important positions in GP. I'd be very interested to know more on this Tom if you've the time, as I must admit I was a tad surprised to see my Texans so high!

Cheers,

Martyn

Texans look the pick of the AFC.  Great XP.  OL will give a quality QB time.  Real solid D.

So in summary, Texans, Bengals, Packers for me.

Nick, you are only saying this to make me even more depressed about AY than I am about AR, should I fail!!!

I was really impressed with the amount of interest out there!

I started doing these rankings because I was doing well but I was still getting beaten in the playoffs which as we all know is incredibly frustrating.  My dilema in season 1 in the NFLAA was that I drafted some players who I cut soon after. My squad was smaller than everyones and I was beaten black and blue for the first 2 seasons.  I then got the hang of it and started to challenge for playoff spots.  The problem was my squad remained small for about 10 years and I kept getting beaten in the playoffs.  I knew that I was being beaten by better squads but I wanted to know what effect the coaches were having on their team.  As a consolation I would at least know how many times I could beat a better squad and satisfy myself that my coaching was actually successful. (If that makes sense.)
In my Power Ratings the QB is obviously a key player (as Smug says), as is the NT or MLB (who get bonuses).  The players who contribute less are the 3rd RB and the 2nd TE. The person who does not contribute is the backup QB. In my opinion the DL should also be ranked slightly higher but I have not done this in this version.  In previous years I have ranked other players higher such as the kicker.
I do not know who is on reduced effectiveness or how many special teams strengths a team has so these factors are ignored.  I also did not add the coaching in the pre-season game as I just wanted to get a ranking out quickly.

The formula is to multiply the age by the strength by the "effectiveness factor" and adding up all the scores.  The highest ranked team is normalized to equal 100 and all the other teams are divided by the same factor.
Hope this helps!

Great stuff Tom, very fascinating insight indeed.  Considering i don't think my roster is quite as good as last year, makes me think i milked a fair bit out of Chiefs last season. http://www.users.on.net/~acoombe/frazzled.gif

Packers and Texans are the new superbowl favourites, the pressure is on boys, anything short of the CHAMPIONSHIP games is a wasted season!

Tom, and you said you where not the number guy l'd had to see Ed's numbers!

Just our luck last season Smug got the Black Cats this season Danny gives Sir Buck the number one ranked Bears! Why would you have left the bears?

WHAT?!  I'm currently 1-1 & have never been past the Divisional round of the playoffs - so I think its far too early to be talking about me getting to the Superbowl.  Remember I have the Bears in my Div, who topped the rankings!  http://www.users.on.net/~acoombe/shock.gif

After my performances in the first two weeks, I'd be happy to get to the post season!  http://www.users.on.net/~acoombe/surprised.gif

Everyone forgets, I may have a good squad, but I ain’t that good a coach (my overall gameplan record would back this up, I’d be under .500 for sure.)  http://www.users.on.net/~acoombe/grumpy.gif

Don't worry you will soon be able to learn from the best.  The Bears would have to be the Superbowl favourites in my opinion (with apologies to Smug, Alan, Alex, Pats, Texans, Norman, etc, etc........).

He's 2-0 on autopilot. Now he's waved his backup QB and will start fixing/coaching.  I fear for the NFC Central.

He may correct me if I'm wrong but from memory my record against the AA Eagles is 2-0. I must be the only coach in Australia with a winning record against Colin!

I can just see the headline now:
Packers win Superbowl despite poor coaching.
http://www.users.on.net/~acoombe/funny%20face.gif
In a league like this with so much support, and so many different styles from which to draw inspiration past performance is not indicator of what you are capable of, especially with the high level of involvement and competition raising the bar and increasing your potential.
Take me for example, this time last year I had only just played my first ADVANCED game! Now I am trying to find a way to be the only other Aussie coach with a winning record against the Buckster!
